A Triple Bypass Show review!!
Embracing the Empty Sky, Death First, Deadfall@ the Boiler Room. Sat, June 21
This was the first Boiler Room show for quite a while. Not a lot of people bothered getting out of bed for this, since it was a 2 p.m. show. Actually I think the bands made up 50 percent of the audience. Embracing the Empty Sky started it off. They are a techy metal band from Rochester I think. They had rough, and sometimes pretty fast, male/female traded vocals, and interesting guitar and drumming. the drummer used the cymbal stands for percussion, which sounded pretty neat. The best part was their cover of an Anal Cunt song. I hate that band, but the cover was well done. I didn't think I would be too interested in this band, but they rock hard. Check them out and I'm sure you will like them, no matter what it is you listen to. Next was Death First, a chaotic group of drunks from Menomenie, WI. they almost couldn't play this show because their bass couldn't get off work, but this Gavin guy filled in. I missed the first three songs to skate up a drainage ditch. Death First grinded my face off once again. Fast and very rough female screams, its amazing that the singer can keep up without seeming to lose her breath during songs. There was no loud puking in the bathroom from Tyler this time. aww. Their set was short. Next was Deadfall from San Francisco. They are a DC style hardcore band, and at least one of them is an awesome skater. a few guitar riffs of their songs sounded very Californian. pissed off lyrics, vocals weren't as rough as their recordings. not too energetic, since it was pretty early. a good set though, and good end to the show. i lost a chicken fight. :(
Deadfall, From Ashes Rise, Assault @ the Red Sea, Minneapolis Sat, June 21
This was my first time at the Red Sea. I had to spare change 9 dollars for it. I got a little smoked up before this show, which I don't really like to do. I have a hard enough time trying to keep my balance for an extended period of time. I sobered up soon enough. Deadfall opened up and they were a bit more jumpier than several hours before. DC style hardcore, vocalist was getting a little winded. pretty good set. From Ashes Rise came next. I was way excited to see them. They play a dark, heavy, rough noise with good peace themed lyrics. damn, they were awesome! During their set one of the street punks attending the show was gotten on to by Mr. Havoc for having a beer in the show space. He didn't take kindly to that, and dissed Felix's authority. from what I heard the resulting argument was pretty entertaining. Next up was Assault, a Japanese peace crust band. I think all Japanese people are way sexy. These guys certainly were. They were low, rough, and the singer was really into it. It's fun to see bands having a good time on stage. Most of the songs, if not all of them, were sung in Japanese. They motivated my body to throw itself every which way. Their set was one of the best things I've experienced, because the crowd was really motivated by the band. All the members seemed like really nice people. Hopefully a lot more Japanese bands will hear about the amount of bling Assault got at this and come visit the Midwest. This show was WELL worth my friends' money. ha.
Death First, Brats 'n Cheese, Deathbag, Crucial Unit @ the Masterpiece Theatre Sun, June 22
Death First started things off. The singer was pretty winded and as a result not too rough. Just gave me slight abrasions, I still had my face by the end of the set. They are a damn great band. Next came Brats 'n Cheese. I had no idea what to expect, as I haven't heard them before, and the shy innocent look of the members threw me off, as well as the intro to the first song which made me think at first they have a lot of ska influence. then they hit me like pavement. Very loud and rough female fronted screams about life and war. My favorite noise. Pretty intense stuff. I likes it. I want to see more of them. Deathbag was next, playing their last show of their North American tour, and it was the guitarists last show with them, they were kicking him out. They were pretty heavy, low crusty screams. Most of the vocals were done by the drummer. The guitarist's vocals were good too, higher and not as rough. The drummer seemed like kind of an asshole, he was staring at the guitarist with utter contempt during the whole set. Damn good drumming though. The last song was really good. By the time Crucial Unit started, Andy and Jerome were good and drunk. The small little basement got really really crazy. Crucial Unit is a really intense Thrash band from the East with high screamed vocals. the best word to use is, well, CRUCIAL! The packed crowd heaved everywhere, and as usual I danced my arse off. No one could ever stop me from dancing my hardest. This night was too fun, it didn't feel like just a show, it felt much more meaningful. *sniff* Last two shows have been the best for a long time.

4-29-03 I should have written this 8 months ago. this site is officially dead. I'm struggling in school, which takes my mind off of pondering what's important to me, and i'm trying to keep involved with two zines, Crush, Kill, and Destroy, which andy, jerome, and myself print and distribute at shows, and Death Comes on Swift Wings ( xcleancutx.tripod.com ) which is getting a new website soon. perhaps on a rainy summer night i'll have time to write a bunch of pointless ponderings and relevant issues. oh, me, andy, and jerome will be practicing a much talked about band on May 2nd. until then, stay curious, stay free....peace!
